Management Bios

Steve Smith — President and CEO

During his 16 years of captaining Ampersand, Steve has overseen and led many projects, ranging from large distributed database implementations, to SIP and VoIP implementations, from IT governance to real-time software design and implementation. Steve has been an active member of the IP Communications community since 2000, and is a regular speaker at industry events. He is actively involved in network neutrality issues. He sits on the board of the Global IP Alliance, an organization dedicating to promoting a light regulatory touch on IP Communications internationally. Steve also served 5 years as CTO and Chief Scientist under contract to Lavalife, a leader in the field of internet and voice dating services. Prior to founding Ampersand, Steve worked as an independent software contractor specializing in real-time systems. Steve's Tech Journal, a blog focused on IP Communications, is a compilation of Steve's observations on the IP Commnications industry. Steve has a B.S. in Computer Science from Cornell University.

Doug Campbell — Chief Engineer

Doug is a veteran IT architect and has been the principal designer and senior implementor for numerous systems during his 25-year career. While at Ampersand, Doug was named to the USAF Chief Architects office, which set architectural standards and guidelines for all USAF IT procurements. Doug has developed large distributed database systems as well as complex telephony, VoIP, and IVR systems. He is skilled in many software development environments, languages, OSes, and techniques, and uses his experience to try to find the most efficient technology for any project. Doug is active in the open source community, and is constantly tinkering with Linux, Myth, Asterisk and other open source projects. He is the principal author of VoiceGlue, a project to provide a fully GPL'ed VXML implementation on top of Asterisk. Doug holds two masters degrees in Computer Science from Cornell University, and completed his A levels for his PhD prior to leaving academia for a full-time career in industry.
